The Vinho Verde Wine Region
The Vinho Verde wine region was designated in 1908 and is considered one of the oldest in Portugal and among the biggest in Europe, with roots that date back to the Roman period. The English Factory House, located in Viana do Castelo, was responsible for the first exports of wine to Northern Europe in the XV Century.
The region is situated in the Northwest of Portugal, crossed by valleys and rivers, with a majestic view over the Atlantic. The altitude is never higher than 700 meters, the climate is mild and the soils are, generally, granite based.
Its limits are naturally defined, to the North by the Minho River, to the South by the Douro and the Freita, Arada and Montemuro ranges, to the East by the Peneda, Gerês, Cabreira and Marão ranges and to the West by the Atlantic.
The following varieties are recommended for the production of white Vinho Verde:
AZAL: A fine, fresh and citrusy aroma, with hints of fruit (lemon and green apple), which is rich in acidity.
The following varieties are recommended for the production of red Vinho Verde:
The following varieties are recommended for the production of rosé Vinho Verde:
Together, the areas which produce Vinho Verde take up about 21 000 hectares of vineyard. There are more than 600 bottlers and an annual production of around 80 million liters: 85% white, 13% red and 2% rosé. 70% of the wine is consumed in Portugal.
Vinho Verde ranks second in terms of sales in Portugal, and first during the hotter months, because of the lightness and freshness for which it is so well known.
The remaining 30% of production are exported to over 70 markets, including USA, Germany, France, Canada, Angola, UK, Brazil and Switzerland. Exports have risen steadily since the year 2000, and Vinho Verde is Portugal’s most exported Designation of Origin.
Being a Designation of Origin, Vinho Verde is rightly seen as unique in the world. With its characteristic fruity and floral aromas, it is a fresh wine, soft in the mouth and light bodied, with a perfect level of acidity, low alcohol rate and an excellent and persistent finish. These factors, which describe it perfectly, are the result of essential factors such as the natural conditions of the region, the local varieties and ancient know-how.
Vinho Verde, unique in the world!
